Navigation and exploration of the Darwin Cordillera from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia. November – December 2011
Last December, we made a very short expedition (12 days) to investigate the mountains and geography of the Darwin Cordillera. We set sail in a small Chilean ship called ‘Nueva Galicia’, which led us through the many local fjords and channels, giving us great access to much of the surrounding area of this mountain range. From Punta Arenas we visited the Straits of Magellan to Canal Magdalena and on to the Peninsula Brecknock and the open sea, which was the part of our trip most at risk to bad weather and could have stopped us in our tracks. However, the weather was mild and we continued to BahÃa Desolacion and via the Canal Ballenero all the way to the Canal Beagle, where we continued on to Puerto Williams. There we waited for the famous Argentine captain Alejandro Da Milano with his boat Mago del Sur to take us to Ushuaia. (more…)
Cerro Las Tortolas & Ojos del Salado Expedition (Chile) January 2012
The goal of our expedition was to climb these two challenging 6000 meter peaks, but due to the snow conditions we only climbed Vn. San Francisco (6016m). I was a charming trip: we started acclimatizing in la Parva area, then spent some days in the beautiful surroundings of Cerro Las Tortolas (6160m). Then we moved to Ojos del Salado area and were astonished by the amount of snow on the slopes of the mountains, which is unusual for the season. After climbing Vn San Francisco we drove to Rancagua and spent a couple of days at Puma Lodge. It was a pleasant end for our January adventure… Check out the pictures!
