Altitude & Acclimatization

Our programs are designed to give clients time for proper acclimatization. If a client requires a longer acclimatization period, he or she must notify the guide immediately in order to modify the trip accordingly. Any additional expenses resulting from these changes will be borne by the client. ChileMontaña recommends that clients undertake a mountain trip before going on one of our high altitude ascents. Such extra experiences will provide you with an increased chance of success for the next demanding expedition.

Booking – How do I book a trip, an expedition or a course with ChileMontaña?

ChileMontaña requests that all bookings be made by fax or email. A response will be given within 48 hours. It is important to include the following information with the booking request:

– The exact number of participants.
– The full names of all participants (as they appear in the passport).
– Flight details (arrival and departure times of international flights).
– Passport number.
– Program name and tour code.

Please note that every ChileMontaña program has a booking deadline and please keep in mind that some of our programs require a mandatory medical certificate. We will confirm your booking request once we have received a 10% deposit (non-refundable) of the total cost of the program. The balance is due 30 days prior to the program’s start date. (Please note that our trips and expeditions to Patagonia and our ski programs have a different payment scheme. You will be given the payment details for these programs when booking.)

Fitness – Am I fit enough to participate in ChileMontaña’s trips or expeditions?

In the itinerary of each program you can find detailed information regarding the number of walking hours, the elevation gains as well as the technical challenges on each expedition. The itinerary also provides information about the level of comfort of the accommodations and the weather conditions in the areas visited. If you have any doubts, feel free to send us an email with your concerns and we will work out the perfect trip for your personal ability level.

Flights – Does ChileMontaña provide international and/or domestic flights?

Our offers do not include international flights and the purchase of international airfares is your own responsibility. However, we will book your domestic airfares, including on the following routes: Chile-Argentina, Chile-Bolivia and Chile–Peru.

Gear & Equipment – What equipment is provided by ChileMontaña?

ChileMontaña provides all communal camping gear and mountaineering equipment such as tents, full base camp equipment, gas stoves, ropes, pots, sleeping mats and similar. All clients are responsible for bringing their personal equipment as mentioned on the equipment list that we send out once the booking is made. For your security, ChileMontaña guides always carry a first aid kit, VHF radio transceivers and, depending on the program, emergency oxygen equipment, a hyperbaric chamber, GPS and/or a satellite phone.

Guide-to-clients ratio

Depending on the program, the clients’ needs and the technical level of difficulty, the ratio of guides to clients will be as follows (Please note these may change depending on the group):

– Short Getaways 1:6 (non-technical), 1:2 (technical climbs), 1:3 (rock climbing)

Health care – Do I need any medical proof to participate in ChileMontaña expeditions?

Prior to the trip you must check with your doctor in order to make sure that you do not incur any risk by participating in our programs. This is especially the case for those programs that take you to high altitudes or that demand extensive physical efforts. We may ask clients to bring a medical proof for some of our mountaineering and adventure programs.

Insurances – What insurances do I need when travelling with ChileMontaña?

Valid medical, accident and repatriation insurances are mandatory for all participants on any of ChileMontaña’s trips. After completion of your booking, we will ask you to send us your insurance details such as the insurance company name and the policy number. This information will be passed on to your guide(s) in case you need assistance during your trip or expedition. We also strongly recommend that you purchase a cancellation and interruption insurance in case you need to cancel your trip or return home during your trip due to an emergency.

Lodging – How will I be accommodated during my trip with ChileMontaña?

Our programs include 3 & 4 star hotels, lodges, mountain huts and camping. You can find detailed information in the day-by-day itinerary of each adventure. Single occupancy can be requested at additional charges (see program descriptions). Please note that single occupancy is not available in most mountain huts and altitude camps. (In higher altitudes weight plays a significant role and therefore single tents will not necessarily be provided above the base camp.)

Meals – Are meals and drinks included on ChileMontaña trips?

In cities and towns, most meals are included, beverages are not. Please find detailed information in the day-by-day itinerary of each program. During camping programs all meals and drinks (wine, beer, juice, water etc.) are included. Alcoholic beverages will be supplied in moderation.

Money – Should I bring US Dollars or Euros? Are credit cards accepted in the places we visit?

US Dollars, Euros and most major credit cards are widely accepted in the major cities. Local currencies can be withdrawn from ATMs or exchanged in exchange offices in the cities. However, many regions we visit are very remote and offer only few opportunities to withdraw or exchange money or to pay by credit card. Your guide will be able to help you decide how much money to exchange into the local currency. In general, US Dollar or Euro bills in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 are always useful and welcome almost everywhere.

ChileMontaña accepts the following forms of payment:

– Credit Cards: Visa, Master Card, Magna, American Express, Diners Club (Diners Club is only accepted at our ChileMontaña store in Santiago)
– Bank transfer to our Chilean bank account

Transportation – How will I travel on my ChileMontaña adventure?

On our trips, we use 4WD or 2WD double cabin pick-ups, minibuses or vans (depending on road conditions and safety considerations), airplanes, trains and boats as well as, to a great extent, our feet or bicycles to travel. All our programs are very different in regard to the transportation used, but we always try to find the best balance between comfort, security, speed and environmental friendliness.

Vaccinations – Do I require any vaccinations?

At present, no vaccines or medical exams are necessary for travelling in Chile. Most of the regions we visit outside of Chile do not require any kind of vaccination either. However, some of our expeditions that go to tropical areas in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina may require specific vaccines. If this is the case with you, we will let you know in advance and request that you visit your local vaccination clinic for the most up-to-date information.

Visa – Do I need a visa for Chile, Argentina, Bolivia or Peru?

The countries we visit do not require visas for European and North American visitors. However, some nationalities do pay a tourist entrance fee upon arriving at the airport in Santiago. Current entrance fees are as follows (but we recommend that you check again before travelling in case the fees have changed):
– Canadian citizens USD $132
– US citizens USD $100
– Australian citizens USD $56
– Mexican citizens USD $15
Upon arriving in Chile, you will be issued a tourist card which is valid for 90 days. In Argentina and Peru, you will have to pay an airport tax upon your departure. In Bolivia, you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 30 Bolivianos. American citizens will have to pay USD $ 130 for acquiring a Bolivian tourist visa.
