3 SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA – SAN BARTOLO – RIO GRANDE (3,000m)
Short drive to San Bartolo, from where we start hiking along the riverbed towards Rio Grande, our next campsite, 7 to 8 hours away. Just like each trekking day, we carry only a day-pack with some food, clothes and water while all the gear is transported by car to our next campsite. The amazing and incredible life around the river surprises us at every moment, as it strongly contrasts with the rocky, sandy and dry terrain just a few meters away. Rio Grande is a small village which still survives from farming and herding. Set up camp, rest, and have dinner.
Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
4 RIO GRANDE – MACHUCA (4,000m)
Today we climb for about 6 hours to the village of Machuca, from 2,700m to 3,400m above sea level. Along the way we see examples of terrace agriculture which is carried out today just as it was in ancient times. Machuca used to be a regular stopover for ancient llama caravans traveling along the Inca Trail. Despite the lovely surroundings, rich in flora and fauna, only a few shepherds still live in this lonely spot at the confluence of two rivers. Set up camp and have dinner.
Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
5 MACHUCA – PURITAMA BATHS – TATIO GEYSERS (4,200m)
In the morning we go on a short drive and a two-hour trek to Puritama Hot Springs. The springs are located at 3,400m and have been well known already before the arrival of the Incas. Here we have time to enjoy a relaxing bath before we get into the cars and drive up to the 4,270m high El Tatio Geysers. The El Tatio geothermal field is one of the highest geyser fields in the world and we set up camp in its surroundings.
