1 ARRIVAL IN SANTIAGO (700m)

2 SANTIAGO – CALAMA – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA (2,400m)
Flight to Calama, in the heart of the Atacama desert, from where we drive across the most arid part of the desert to the oasis San Pedro de Atacama. In the afternoon, visit of the Quitor fortress and transfer to the Moon Valley for an unforgettable sunset.

3 SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA – SAN BARTOLO (3-4 hours trekking)
We leave San Pedro by car for a quick 20-minute drive to start our half-day trek along the San Pedro river, which we cross several times this morning. The trail we walk along has been used by the local populations for centuries to move their lamas and sheep from one grassland to the other.

4 SAN BARTOLO – RÍO GRANDE (7-9 hours trekking)
The trail we take in the morning follows the Río Grande river. After lunch we climb a little bit into the desert. We walk across red stony terrain surrounded by cacti. At the end of the day, we approach the river again and reach the agricultural lands of Rio Grande. We spend the night in the village.

5 RÍO GRANDE – MACHUCA (6-7 hours trekking)
We wake up in a village lost in the middle of the Atacama Desert. After a good breakfast and dismantling the camp, we start our trek to Machuca village on the high plateaus. The landscape changes several times today: first we go through the onion and garlic crops, then we climb east through the Las Cuevas canyon. At the end of the day, we arrive at the Machuca swamp where Lamas and sheep feed in the summer. We are already in the middle of the mountains and we spend the night near the village.

6 MACHUCA – PURITAMA – GEYSERS DEL TATIO (2-3 hours trekking)
After a short drive we start trekking along the Puritama river towards the Puritama hot springs, a green oasis with several hot water pools. The best hot baths in Atacama! In the afternoon we drive back to the high plateaus, this time close to the Bolivian border, and set up our camp in the Tatio Geysers area.

7 GEYSERS DEL TATIO – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA
Very early in the morning we approach the Tatio Geysers so we can enjoy the best moment of the day, at sunrise, when the steam is higher than ever. We have breakfast at the foot of the Tocorpuri volcanoes and then drive back to San Pedro de Atacama. Free afternoon to visit the village.

8 SAN PEDRO ATACAMA – LAGUNA VERDE – LAGUNA COLORADA
We drive to Paso de Hama and cross the border to Bolivia. Our first destination today is Laguna Verde at the foot of the volcanoes Licancabur and Juriques. The 4WD keeps moving towards the northeast and we reach Laguna Colorada with its flamingoes, vicuñas and the characteristic white blocks of bore which contrast harshly with the red water of the lake.

9 LAGUNA COLORADA – SAN CRISTÓBAL
In the morning, we drive north through the Avaroa National Park past several magnificent multicolored lagoons. Another overland day of amazing changing landscapes that finishes in the village of San Cristóbal which offers us the comfort of a small hotel.

10 SAN CRISTÓBAL – UYUNI SALT FLAT – JIRIRA
Now we are out of the Avaroa National Park and we have left South Lipez behind us as we are just entering the Uyuni area which is famous for its huge salts flats, the biggest in the world: Salar de Uyuni (or Tunupa ), 12,000 square km, and Salar de Coipasa, 4,500 square km. The two salt lakes are separated only by a narrow range and by the red volcano Tunupa. We cross the Uyuni Salt Flat and drive to the foot of Vn. Tunupa to spend the night in the Indian village of Jirira.

11 JIRIRA – ANQUAQUE THERMAL SPRINGS
We drive west along the Coipasa Salt Flat to the Chilean border and cross over to the Chilean side of the high plateaus. We arrive at the village of Colchane and then head to Anquaque where we spend the night close to a hot spring.

12 ANQUAQUE THERMAL SPRINGS – SURIRE SALT FLAT
We keep driving north, passing the active volcano Isluga, the river Aravilla and several Indian villages on our way. In the afternoon, we drive over a high mountain pass at 4,700m to the Surire Salt Flat and set up our camp near the Polloquere thermal springs.

13 SURIRE SALT FLAT – LAUCA NATIONAL PARK
Surire Salt Flat is a park protected by Conaf and is a flamingo breeding and nesting site. From here we drive north to the Lauca National Park, passing by herds of vicuñas on the way. We drive through the village of Guallatire at the foot of the active volcano Guallatire and continue to Lake Chungará and Lake Cotacotani where we set up camp. From our camp we have an exceptional view of Mt. Pomerape and mt. Parinacota, two heavily glaciated volcanoes.

14 LAUCA NATIONAL PARK – PARINACOTA – ARICA
In the morning we take a short walk in the Cotacotani area and then start our descent west straight to the Ocean. We cross the high plateaus, the pre-Andean range, the Atacama Desert, agricultural valleys and finally reach the old city of Arica and the Pacific Ocean.

15 ARICA – SANTIAGO
Arica was an important port at the time of the Potosí silver mines and today is a nice 150.000 people city. We visit the center and the famous Morro de Arica, have lunch at the fish market before catching our flight to Santiago.
